Social Sharing Impacts Google Rankings – Are You Writing Relevant, High Impact Content?

Google is the 800 lb gorilla in search rankings.  They command 60% to 70% of the search market in any given year.  When Google says they are using Twitter or social media websites in their search engine algorithms any website owner MUST pay attention.

In 2012 Google freely admitted they are using Twitter tweets, Facebook Likes and Google + shares as a ranking signal.

“Yes, we do use Twitter as a signal. It is used as a signal in our organic and news rankings. We also use it to enhance our news universal by marking how many people shared an article.”

The bottom Line is that Google knows that if your content is good enough for people to share it on a social media website, it’s also likely great content to rank highly in the search engines.

What does this mean for a small business owner and their website?

  • Create great content for your website and make it easy for people to share it on social websites with “social sharing” buttons like you find here on BetterBizIdeas.com
  • Make that content highly relevant to your target audience.
  • A website with more tweets and retweets would likely have a more positive rank than one without tweets and retweets, all else being equal. Some top bloggers spend as much time marketing their articles and networking with their target audience as they do CREATING the actual content.  You know, being social works two ways :)

However, knowing the above isn’t enough though….

Google also places importance on WHO retweets your information, interacts with you, your audience, etc.  Does your audience have their own “Author Rank” or high social scores themselves?

Google is actively associating pieces of content with specific authors and computing the authors quality. This means you MUST have a social presence for Google to consider you and authority in your niche and rank your pages accordingly.

As 2013 unfolds consider the comments above as you think about your content marketing and social media strategies.

Great article Ross! Thanks for updates. With so many social sharing tools easily available in the market and with google taking into consideration all the sharing data, I think web site owners are not left with much a choice. Few examples of social sharing tools in my knowledge are addthis, loginradius, sharethis, shareholic and many more
