Is Perfume Business Profitable/Lucrative?

With the average Nigerian family being able to afford at least one (1) perfume oil per month, It has proven to be a lucrative and profitable venture.

The best part? Since there is no ban on selling perfumes in Nigeria, there is no limit to how much money you can make.

How To Start Your Own Perfume Business In Nigeria

Before starting any business, there has to be a solid plan in whole business plan – I’m not joking here. It is the foundation on-top where your business will be built.

Remember the bible says “If the foundation be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” It wasn’t kidding.

Before you can truly make a profitable perfume business in Nigeria, your business plan should have the following details:

  • A mission statement
  • A vision statement
  • Products/Services to offer
  • Target market
  • Sales strategy
  • Income generation methods.
  • Risk management
  • The business environment
  • Business productivity

You have to be very prepared because there are competitions out there. We will also be sharing our secrets with which you can beat competitors, FREE OF CHARGE.

This is because we like you and want you to really succeed in this business venture. It is best to plan your business yourself but if you don’t have time, you can pay someone to help you with that.

Here we go!

  • Locate a Wholesaler

I know you can learn how to make perfumes yourself, but who really has that time making it for so many people, right?

This is where you come in, because while your competitors are wasting time making it here in Nigeria, you’re importing faster and selling it to their customers. Think about it.

If you would still like to learn how to produce perfume oil (we share this in the later part of this content).

Now, as for importing. You can import from China and Dubai for low and ridiculous process and then resell to Nigerians at a higher profit.

This is one of the ways lots of Americans have been making generational wealth.

You’re probably thinking, where to buy perfume oils in bulk? What is perfume oil wholesale price? how to import perfume oils from Dubai (we’ll be sharing this in the later part of this article so keep on reading)?

Good news! You can find good wholesalers to import from by checking ALIEXPRESS (Register Here).

Remember, you have to be ahead of your competitors.

  • Create and Build Trust with Wholesaler

The smartest move you can make is creating a partnership with a wholesaler. There are plenty of times this will save your ass in this line of business.

For example, a customer is in dire need of a particular brands of a product and you don’t have enough cash to order with, your wholesaler will trust you enough to lease the perfume, with the belief that you’ll pay later.

Get it?

Truth is, you cannot survive in any business without building relationships. It’s what the wealthy people understand and have been following this principle for years.

I have found out that lots of young people who go to businesses today – notwithstanding the niche, don’t understand the term ‘wholesaler-retailer relationship.’

  • Package Your Perfume Products

Remember this saying – “How you dress is the way you’ll be addressed”. That goes for your business too. The way you package your goods is the way you’ll be priced.

Remember, branding sets you apart from competitors.

  1. Yourself

Packaging and being able to communicate effectively will help you sell your goods well.

Because no one wants to target poor people, you have to build trust, reliability, and diligence with your customer base.

Are they in the pub? Visit there and speak with them

Are they in offices? Visit there 5 minutes to closing time and speak with them.

I have made huge success by carrying the following things whenever I want to speak to new people about my business:

  • Complimentary cards – print and add a good title (Founder/Creator) to your name.
  • Let your dressing promote and speak for your business.
  • Good quality perfumes should stock your bag or store.
  • Wear signature perfumes at business intervals. It will speak up your perfume business before buyers.
  • Smile and be happy.

Create partnership or employ more set of hands as your business grows.

  1. The Perfumes

If your product is not quality, wealthy people won’t buy from you. So, here are some things you need to do:

Buy quality and not quantity from wholesalers.

Let your price be adapt to the environment. For example, if your price in Victoria Island is Three thousand Naira, then it shouldn’t be the same in Ikorodu. Get it>

Market different kinds of perfumes.

Women use more perfumes than men so having them in quantity will help. So, use common and alluring scents when going out or selling to them.

Nigerian men drink more beer though. Lolz.

  1. Branding

Want to stand out from the crowd? This is one of the ways to do it:

  • You should have the following:
  • Customized sales or delivery bags.
  • Have a business card.
  • Have a website/blog
  • Employ a hand or two.
  • Alert your customers of new products (their perfumes won’t last forever).
  • Have perfumes with price varieties.
  • buy quality perfume to allow you start a profitable perfume business in Nigeria

Maintain a Brand of Perfume

Focusing on a single brand might be able to help you sell quicker. But the question is,

“How do you know the specific brand to keep importing?”

Here is a smart way to know;

Once your capital for your perfume business is ready, I suggest you import so many of them in a single (one) unit.

Once sales start coming in, you should look for the ones that sell faster. Afterward, focus on importing them in large quantities since that is what your customers are looking for.

From there, you can then decide to become a single brand seller.

Being a brand seller means you become such a relevant authority in that area that once the brand is mentioned in Nigeria, your name is what comes to the mind of the people.

If you’re starting smaller with one of the perfume oil wholesale distributors in Nigeria, then you should check the fragrance before picking the one to buy and test.

Once you’ve been able to hand-pick the “gem”, focus on buying that very one in bulk.

Furthermore, to really make your perfume business profitable in Nigeria, you should have a “targeted audience”.

For me, it was the working-class females and guess what? I sold like hell!

  • Be Current/Stay Up To Date with the Industry

Customers love it when their perfume plug is following the latest brands. Assuming you are retailing a brand like Pure Black perfume, ensure you check for new collections regularly because the fans of Pure Black are on the lookout for the latest too.

As a perfume seller in Nigeria, you need to ensure you prioritize delivering the latest and inform your audience long before they discover it.

Like clothe business, you need to be 1 step ahead of your customers. New fragrances means better smell. You dig?

Now that we have concluded the steps it takes to start a successful perfume business in Nigeria let us proceed to the marketing strategies.

Perfume oil business Plan (Business Marketing Strategy)

One of the areas of a perfume oil business plan is the marketing strategy part. Let me quickly reveal to you how you too can market your perfume just like I did.

  • Identify your target market

Irrespective of the state (Lagos, Ibadan, Abuja, Kano, Port-Harcourt etc), there are rich people in your state.

Common places to find them include: church, fellowships, schools, social events, parties etc. Remember, the perfect target market is RICH PEOPLE.

If you want to make a profit from your perfume business, then you should rarely sell to poor people. They will always buy on credit and refuse to pay.

However, if you don’t find the rich then you can market to the middleclass people.

  • Meet Your Potential Customers

Are you scared of meeting wealthy individuals when you finally decide to begin a profitable perfume business? I have found out that it is easier to approach the opposite gender.

For instance, as a guy, women would buy from you more. As a woman, men would typically buy from you more.

I always stand in front of the mirror to practice what I would say in front of people I will meet before actually stepping out of my home.

I sometimes start with the following lines;

“Hi Ma’am, do you mind trying out this elegant product?” – With a sharp smile on my face.

“Hi there, you smell good, I sell what will make you smell even better – with a nice smile”

Whoever accepts, is interested in your perfumes. Then I will allow the individual try it out. Once she tries it, she’ll be moved to buy from me.

Some will give you a listening hear and eventually patronize you while some will outrightly reject you.

I give both my business card and ask the person who rejected me to give me a call if they ever have a change of heart and bid them farewell after wishing them a lovely day ahead.

  • Occasionally sell to the rich on Credit

Credit kills a business – we all know that. But, it is wise to give credit once in a while to repeating, wealthy customers.

Your goal should always to have your product in people’s hands so they can always have you in mind. Remember, they expire so sell out fast so that they don’t become a loss.

If the rich don’t have cash on them, you can sell on credit to them or accept transfer. Plus, avoid selling to politicians at very low levels or to Personal Assistants who carry their shoulders as being rich. This is a way to operate a successful perfume business in Nigeria.

  • Know the Best Places to Meet Them

I always prefer meeting them in the following places;

  • Offices
  • Churches
  • Eateries/bars
  • In their homes
  • Online
  • On their social media platforms, i.e., advertising your perfumes to them on that media

These places are good because you know where to come and ask for your money if they delay making payments.

  • Know and Understand Your Environment

At times, the environment we find ourselves in might prove hostile to our business. So, the best way to evolve in such a place is to adjust to its nature.

Observe and study your buyers, and remember to switch locations at regular intervals to build a wider audience.

Not evolving will cause your business to suffer stagnancy.

  • Build a Strong Link

It is always great to create a connection between your business and several other perfume businesses out there. You can build connections with your present customers while still keeping tabs on other perfume vendors.

Since you would not be retailing in the entire country, you need links with perfume sellers in other countries. It is easy, when you order from the wholesaler, request to hook up with other of their retailers across the country.

Since you are not requesting confidential information, the wholesaler may be able to share their contact information with you.
